Texas Murder Trial Begins with No Black Jurors, Sparking Concerns Over Fairness
The murder trial of Karmelo Anthony, a Black teenager accused of fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf, a white student, during a 2025 high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, has commenced. The jury selection process concluded with 12 jurors and six alternates, none of whom are Black. This has raised concerns about racial bias, as defense lawyers accused prosecutors of improperly excluding the remaining Black prospective jurors. The district judge accepted the state's explanation that these jurors were removed because they are educators. The trial, which is expected to last two weeks, involves testimony from eyewitnesses and the presentation of surveillance footage. Anthony, who is being tried as an adult, faces a potential sentence of five years to life in prison if convicted.
