US Space Force Commissions Flatellites for Enhanced Airspace Surveillance
The US Space Force has contracted three American companies to develop and build reconnaissance satellites, known as 'Flatellites', to monitor and track airborne threats such as aircraft, drones, and missiles. This initiative is part of the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program announced in April. The program aims to replace traditional airborne surveillance methods, which have become impractical in heavily contested areas. Rocket Lab is one of the companies involved, receiving $397 million to build and operate these satellites. The satellites will be equipped with high-bandwidth communication technology and sensors, and will be launched using Rocket Lab's Neutron rocket.
