Sandy Fire in Simi Valley Reaches 71% Containment; Evacuation Orders Lifted
The Sandy Fire, which began near Sandy Avenue in Simi Valley, California, on Monday, has burned 2,183 acres and is now 71% contained as of Saturday evening, according to Cal Fire. The fire initially spread rapidly due to shifting winds, steep terrain, and canyon-driven fire behavior. Over 850 personnel, along with air and ground resources, have been deployed to combat the blaze. The fire has destroyed at least one home and caused mandatory evacuation orders earlier in the week. However, all evacuation orders and warnings were lifted on Friday. The fire was reportedly sparked by a tractor hitting a rock, igniting dry vegetation. Governor Gavin Newsom announced federal firefighting funds to assist in suppression efforts through a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA.
