Pennsylvania Legislators Propose Bill to Streamline Statehouse IT Spending
State Representatives Paul Friel and Joe Ciresi have introduced the UNITE Act, aimed at reducing redundant IT spending within the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The bill proposes consolidating the IT infrastructure of the House and Senate caucuses into a single nonpartisan office over five years. This office would manage hardware procurement, software licensing, network administration, and cybersecurity services. The initiative seeks to eliminate duplications and improve communication between the caucuses, which currently operate independently due to mistrust. The proposal follows a report highlighting that maintaining separate systems costs taxpayers $34 million annually. The bill also addresses security concerns, as multiple systems increase risks. Similar centralized IT models are already in place in states like Maryland and Iowa.
