Rising Trend of Parents Declining Vitamin K Shots Leads to Fatal Bleeding in Newborns
There is an alarming increase in cases of newborns experiencing fatal bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency, a condition that can be easily prevented with a vitamin K shot at birth. Despite the long-standing recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1961, many parents are refusing this essential injection. The refusal is often based on misinformation, such as the belief that the vitamin K shot is a vaccine, or due to a growing distrust in healthcare systems. Between 2017 and 2024, nearly 200,000 newborns did not receive the vitamin K injection, marking a 77% increase in refusals. This deficiency significantly raises the risk of serious bleeding within the first week of life and can continue to pose a threat for up to six months. The condition, known as vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), can lead to severe health issues, including brain hemorrhages and death.
