Unlicensed Catering Business Shut Down After Rock Island Football Team Suffers Food Poisoning
An unlicensed, home-based catering business named Sunshine and Spice, owned by Joshua Harris, has been ordered to cease operations by the Rock Island Health Department. This action follows a foodborne illness outbreak that sickened at least 45 individuals, including players, coaches, and parents of the Rock Island High School football team. The incident occurred after a team dinner on September 24, where a taco bar-style meal was served. Symptoms reported included vomiting and diarrhea, though no hospitalizations were required, and most symptoms subsided within 24 hours. The health department discovered that Sunshine and Spice was neither licensed nor food-safety certified. Joshua Harris issued a statement apologizing for the situation and confirming cooperation with the Rock Island County Health Department and law enforcement in their ongoing investigation. Ingredients for the meal were reportedly purchased from Moline Walmart, Spotted Apron in Geneseo, and farmers' markets in Davenport and Coal Valley.
