Anthropic Implements Invisible Watermarks on AI Content to Comply with EU Regulations
Anthropic has announced the implementation of machine-readable watermarks on content processed by its AI models, including Claude, to comply with the European Union's AI Act. This act mandates AI system providers to watermark AI-generated or manipulated outputs such as audio, image, text, and video. The law applies to any AI model released after August 2, with a grace period until December 2026 for providers to update previously released models. Anthropic's approach involves embedding invisible watermarks in text outputs and digitally signed provenance metadata in other generated files. The company plans to share details on detection tools to offer technical support required by the EU's law. However, the effectiveness of these watermarks remains uncertain until Anthropic releases a detection tool for testing.
