Recount Alters Indiana Senate District 23 Outcome, Paula Copenhaver Declared Winner
In a surprising turn of events, Paula Copenhaver has been declared the winner of the Indiana Senate District 23 race following a recount that invalidated several ballots. Initially, incumbent Republican Senator Spencer Deery was presumed to have won the May primary. However, the Indiana Recount Commission, which includes Republican Secretary of State Diego Morales and representatives from both major parties, rejected eight ballots for Deery due to missing signatures or initials required by state law. This decision reversed Deery's three-vote lead, giving Copenhaver a three-vote victory. Copenhaver, who chairs the Fountain County Republican Party, expressed her readiness to unite Republicans and others for the upcoming election. Deery's legal team criticized the commission's decision, arguing it disenfranchised voters over technicalities. Deery plans to appeal the decision, with the Indiana Court of Appeals expected to expedite the process due to upcoming election deadlines.
