Study Reveals Earth's Core May Be Leaking Precious Metals
A study published in Nature suggests that Earth's core may be leaking material into the mantle, as evidenced by ruthenium isotope signals found in Hawaiian volcanic rocks. This challenges the previous assumption that the core and mantle are completely isolated. The research, led by geochemist Nils Messling, indicates that some core-derived material is reaching the surface through volcanic activity. The study does not suggest that gold is being extracted, but it provides new insights into the core-mantle interaction.
