Austin Police Launch 'No Wrong Door' Program to Address Homelessness and Mental Health Crisis
The Austin Police Department (APD) has initiated a new program called 'No Wrong Door,' a collaborative effort aimed at assisting individuals experiencing homelessness who also have complex mental health disorders and frequently interact with law enforcement and public health systems. The program targets approximately 950 individuals identified as 'high utilizers' of public resources, costing an estimated $137 million annually through repeated arrests, emergency room visits, psychiatric crises, and criminal trespasses. Four APD officers, selected for their experience or interest in mental health calls, homeless outreach, and substance abuse, are assigned to about 25 individuals each.
