RPI Researchers Develop New Approach to Treating Chronic Neuropathic Pain
Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in collaboration with the University of Sydney and the University of Copenhagen, have developed a new approach to treating chronic neuropathic pain. This method enhances the nervous system's natural inhibitory controls rather than relying on opioids. The research focuses on GlyT2, a neuronal glycine transporter, and introduces a new compound, RPI-GLYT2-82, which binds reversibly to GlyT2. Preclinical studies show that this compound provides effective pain relief without the side effects associated with current inhibitors. The study, published in Nature Communications, also reveals the structural basis for the compound's action, offering a roadmap for developing safer analgesics.
