Argentina Extends $19 Billion Currency Swap with China to Bolster Reserves
Argentina's central bank has renewed its currency swap agreement with the People's Bank of China, extending the facility for five more years until 2031. This agreement secures over $19 billion to support Argentina's international reserves. The renewal, finalized on August 5, comes after months of uncertainty and is a significant component of Argentina's financial strategy. The swap line, initially signed in 2009, has been a cornerstone of financial cooperation between the two nations. The extension increases the swap's duration from three to five years, providing greater predictability for Argentina's financial planning. The agreement includes a previously authorized tranche of CNY35 billion, approximately $5 billion, to support financial stability and bilateral trade with China. Despite President Javier Milei's initial anti-China rhetoric, the necessity of maintaining economic stability has led to the continuation of this financial arrangement.
