MaineHealth Board Votes to Close Lincoln County's Only Labor and Delivery Unit, Sparking Community Backlash
MaineHealth has announced the closure of Lincoln County's only labor and delivery unit at Lincoln Hospital in Damariscotta, effective December 18. This decision follows significant opposition from local residents, state leaders, and advocacy groups. Despite a lawsuit filed to prevent the closure, MaineHealth's board of trustees voted to proceed, citing low birth rates and staffing challenges as reasons for the closure. The hospital will continue to offer prenatal and postpartum care, but expectant mothers will need to travel to MaineHealth Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for deliveries. Governor Janet Mills expressed deep disappointment over the decision, which marks the second such closure by MaineHealth in two years.
