Transportation Department Encourages Veterans to Transition into Truck Driving Amid Industry Challenges
The Department of Transportation has launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging veterans to transition into commercial truck driving roles. This campaign, known as the 'Freedom Haulers' initiative, is designed to leverage the skills veterans acquired during their military service, particularly those who have experience driving heavy military vehicles. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the suitability of veterans for these roles, citing their precision, independence, and discipline. The initiative follows a similar effort from 2025, which sought to recruit veteran military air traffic controllers for the Federal Aviation Administration. Veterans interested in this opportunity can apply for waivers to bypass certain road tests and may receive tuition funding for training from the VA, provided they have served at least three years.
