Meta Implements AI for Age Verification on Facebook and Instagram
Meta has introduced an artificial intelligence system on its Facebook and Instagram platforms to identify and remove users under the age of 13. This new technology estimates users' ages by analyzing visual cues such as height and bone structure from their photos and videos. Meta clarifies that this process is not facial recognition but rather age estimation based on general visual data. If the system determines a user is under 13, their account is blocked, and they must undergo an age verification process to avoid permanent deletion. Currently, this system is operational in selected countries, with plans for a global rollout. Additionally, Meta is expanding its safe account system for teenagers in the European Union and Brazil, which restricts messages from strangers and hides harmful comments.
