Prince Harry and Co-Claimants Ordered to Pay £9.5 Million in Daily Mail Lawsuit Costs
Britain’s Prince Harry, Elton John, and other public figures have been ordered by a London High Court to pay an initial £9.5 million (€11 million) to Associated Newspapers Ltd., the publisher of the Daily Mail. This payment is the first installment of a larger legal costs bill following their loss in a privacy lawsuit. The court ruled that the losing parties must cover Associated Newspapers’ costs on an 'indemnity' basis, a more punitive method of calculating legal expenses. Judge Matthew Nicklin stated that serious allegations, including phone hacking and the bugging of cars and houses, were advanced without sufficient evidential foundation. The judge also noted that it was 'regrettable' for the Duke of Sussex to have described an earlier judgment, which dismissed claims of unlawful activity at the Mail, as a 'complete and obvious whitewash.' The final legal tally is still being calculated, but Associated Newspapers' legal costs totaled £34 million as of last month. The payment is due by 4 pm on August 28...
