Racine County Sheriff's Deputy Charged After Accidental Shooting During Turkey Hunt
A Racine County Sheriff's Office deputy has been charged with four felonies following an accidental shooting incident during a youth turkey hunt in April. The deputy, James Lehman, allegedly allowed his 3-year-old daughter to pull the trigger of a 12-gauge shotgun, resulting in injuries to a coworker and the coworker's 7-year-old son. The incident occurred at Honey Creek Wildlife Area. The 7-year-old boy underwent surgery, but pellets remain in his skull, brain, and near his spinal cord. The coworker sustained injuries to his back, lower torso, left hand, forearm, and upper arm, and experienced significant swelling and numbness in his left arm weeks after the incident. Lehman, who admitted to being an inexperienced turkey hunter, is currently on administrative leave. The case is being handled by the Walworth County District Attorney due to the involvement of two Racine County Sheriff's Office employees.
