Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Results in Three Deaths, Raises Health Concerns
A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in the deaths of three passengers, with one confirmed case and five additional suspected cases, according to the World Health Organization. The outbreak occurred while the ship was traveling between Argentina and Cape Verde. Among the deceased are a husband and wife, aged 70 and 69, and a third individual who remains unidentified. A 69-year-old British national is currently in intensive care in South Africa. The ship, operated by Dutch tour company Oceanwide Expeditions, has not commented on the situation. The outbreak has been linked to a severe acute respiratory illness, with hantavirus typically transmitted through contact with infected rodent excreta. The UK Foreign Office is monitoring the situation and is prepared to assist British nationals if necessary.
