Houston Officials Unveil $48 Million Initiative to Combat Homelessness Amidst Shelter Wait Times
Houston officials, in partnership with the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston and Harris County, unveiled a new $48 million initiative named "Pathways 2 Independence" to address homelessness across the region over the next three years. This program aims to provide faster and more flexible interventions for chronic homelessness, defined as 90 days or longer without housing. The initiative has already secured $34 million from local philanthropies, including the Brown Foundation, Cullen Foundation, Houston Endowment, Kinder Foundation, and Sarofim Foundation. This funding model allows local organizations greater flexibility in how funds are spent, contrasting with the more restrictive federal dollars that typically govern homelessness programs. The program seeks to address the needs of approximately 5,700 people experiencing homelessness in the Houston region annually, with a focus on rapid resolution.
