Report Reveals Nitrate Contamination in U.S. Tap Water Affecting Millions
A new report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that over 62 million Americans may be exposed to dangerous levels of nitrates in their tap water. Nitrates, compounds of nitrogen and oxygen, become hazardous when agricultural fertilizers leach into water systems. The report highlights that more than 6,000 community water systems tested at or above 3 milligrams per liter of nitrates, levels linked to various health issues including cancers and birth defects. Major cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Philadelphia are among those affected. The report underscores the need for updated federal guidelines, as current standards set in 1962 do not reflect recent scientific findings on health impacts at lower nitrate concentrations.
