AI Technology Used to Design New Viruses Raises Biosafety Concerns
Researchers at Stanford University have utilized artificial intelligence to design 16 new viruses, specifically bacteriophages, to combat antibiotic-resistant infections. This groundbreaking experiment, published in the journal Science, marks the first time AI has been used to design complete viral genomes. The AI models, Evo1 and Evo2, were trained to predict genetic codes, resulting in hundreds of virus designs, of which 16 were successfully reproduced in a lab. The research aims to develop new treatments for infections that no longer respond to traditional antibiotics. However, the study has sparked significant concern among experts about the potential misuse of this technology, particularly in creating bioweapons. Dr. Thomas Inglesby and Dr. Moritz Hanke from the Center for Health Security at Johns Hopkins University have highlighted urgent biosafety and biosecurity questions, emphasizing that viruses capable of causing disease should not be pursued.
