Sysco Halts Lettuce Purchases from Mexico Amid Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
Sysco, the largest broadline food distributor globally, has ceased purchasing iceberg lettuce from Mexico following a cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to Taylor Farms. The outbreak, which has resulted in two deaths in Michigan, was traced back to lettuce served at Taco Bell, sourced from Taylor Farms' operations in central Mexico. Sysco's CEO, Kevin Hourican, announced the decision to stop buying from Taylor Farms and Mexico, citing the need to diversify procurement sources. The company initially halted sales of the affected lettuce in mid-July, prior to Taylor Farms' recall. The outbreak has affected nine states, with the FDA and CDC involved in managing the situation.
