Severe Thunderstorms Expected Across Multiple U.S. Regions
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms for parts of the Great Basin, Central Plains, and Midwest/Great Lakes regions through the evening of August 31, 2026. These storms are associated with an occluded upper low moving eastward from Manitoba and Alberta, combined with a low-amplitude shortwave trough over the Central Plains. Enhanced mid-level westerly flow and a moist, unstable air mass are contributing to the potential for severe weather. Key threats include damaging winds, hail, and isolated supercells, particularly in areas such as eastern Wisconsin, lower Michigan, and western New York. Additionally, thunderstorms in the Central Plains and Great Basin may produce strong downdraft winds and occasional hail.
