City of Huntsville Celebrates Historic Preservation Month with Indigenous History Focus
The City of Huntsville, Alabama, is celebrating Historic Preservation Month by focusing on the region's indigenous history and culturally significant landscapes. Throughout May, city leaders and local historians are highlighting the area's Indigenous history, aligning with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's theme, 'Telling the Full Story of America.' This initiative invites residents to explore histories that have not always been fully recognized. As part of Huntsville's recognition of America's 250th anniversary, the city is spotlighting places of cultural importance to Indigenous tribes, such as Monte Sano Mountain/Park, Ditto Landing, Big Spring Park, Wade Mountain Greenway, and the lands now known as Redstone Arsenal. Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized the importance of understanding and honoring the past to ensure these places remain relevant for future generations.
