Netflix Co-Founder Reed Hastings Donates $1 Million to Oppose California's Proposition 39 Voter ID Initiative
Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings has contributed $1 million to the 'No on 39' committee, actively opposing California's Proposition 39. This ballot measure, set for the November election, seeks to implement strict voter identification requirements in the state. If passed, in-person voters would need to present a valid photo ID, while mail-in voters would be required to provide the last four digits of their identification number on their ballot envelopes. Hastings' wife, Patty Quillin, also donated $1.5 million to a separate anti-Prop 39 coalition linked to the ACLU. Supporters of Proposition 39 argue it is a common-sense approach to combat election fraud and enhance trust in the electoral system, particularly in a state known for lengthy vote-counting processes. However, opponents, including Hastings, believe such measures could suppress voter turnout and erode public confidence in the election system by potentially allowing undetected fraud.
