Portage Initiates Public Engagement for New Comprehensive City Plan
Portage, Indiana, is embarking on the development of a new comprehensive city plan, inviting public input to shape its future. Mayor Austin Bonta, who promised this initiative during his 2023 campaign, is spearheading the effort. The city has launched a survey on its website and scheduled the first public meeting for June 17 at Woodland Park’s Oakwood Room. The plan, being developed by Wightman Consulting and Arsh Group, aims to address new growth trends, development pressures, and economic opportunities. Scott Falk of Wightman Consulting highlighted the significant changes in Portage since the last plan in 2009, noting shifts in population, development patterns, and economic conditions. The plan will focus on enhancing quality of life, community connections, and consistent city services. Mayor Bonta envisions a walkable downtown and development on the city’s north side, including potential projects like the Marquette Greenway extension and transit-oriented development near the South Shore Line station.
