Washington Declares State of Emergency as Wildfires Ravage Spokane, Mobilizing National Guard
Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington has declared a state of emergency in response to uncontrolled wildfires affecting the Spokane region. The declaration enables federal assistance through FEMA, facilitating evacuations, emergency shelters, and other critical response efforts. Over 65,000 residents have been evacuated, with approximately 700 structures reported destroyed. The fires, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, remain uncontained, prompting ongoing mandatory evacuation orders. The National Guard has been mobilized to support firefighting efforts. Authorities have arrested Aaron Farinacci, suspected of arson related to one of the fires, as investigations into the causes continue.
