U.S. Health Officials Advise Vigilance Against Mosquito-Borne Illnesses Amid Summer Season
Health officials in the U.S. are reminding the public about the risks associated with mosquito-borne illnesses as summer approaches. While most mosquito bites are harmless, certain mosquitoes can transmit viruses that cause illness in humans. The West Nile virus is identified as the most common mosquito-borne illness in the United States. Other viruses, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, are more frequently linked to international travel but have been occasionally detected in parts of the U.S. Symptoms of these illnesses, which often resemble the flu, can manifest anywhere from a few days to two weeks after a bite and include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, rash, and joint pain.
