American Farm Bureau Survey Reveals Fertilizer Affordability Crisis Among U.S. Farmers
A recent survey conducted by the American Farm Bureau Federation highlights a significant challenge facing U.S. farmers: the inability to afford necessary fertilizer supplies. The survey, which included responses from over 5,700 farmers across all states and Puerto Rico, found that 70% of participants cannot purchase all the fertilizer they need due to soaring costs. The situation is particularly dire in the southern U.S., where nearly 80% of farmers reported affordability issues, compared to 48% in the Midwest. The survey also revealed that geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have exacerbated the situation by driving up fertilizer and fuel prices. As a result, many farmers are considering reducing their fertilizer use or acreage, which could impact future food and feed supplies.
