Louisiana Sheriffs Under Scrutiny for Opioid Settlement Fund Spending

A collaborative investigation by Verite News, KFF Health News, The Current, and Gulf States Newsroom has revealed that Louisiana sheriffs are spending millions of dollars from opioid settlement funds on items not directly related to addiction treatment or prevention. While these funds are intended to combat the opioid crisis, a panel of experts reviewed reported expenditures and deemed approximately two-thirds, or $5.4 million, as inappropriate. Examples of these expenditures include crime cameras, vehicles, and officer overtime. Louisiana is unique in allocating virtually all of its $621 million in opioid settlement funds to local governments, with sheriffs receiving the largest share earmarked for law enforcement among any state. However, unlike parish governments, sheriffs' offices are not required to file annual reports on their spending, leading to a lack of public accountability. Former Orangeburg Public Safety Officer Charged with Assault and Battery After Allegedly Punching Detainee and Slamming Them into Wall

Christopher James Tyler, a 35-year-old former Orangeburg Public Safety Officer from Orangeburg, South Carolina, has been charged with assault and battery in the second degree by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The charges stem from an incident on July 25, where Tyler, while transporting a handcuffed detainee to jail for booking, allegedly assaulted the individual. According to an affidavit, after the victim spat in Tyler’s face, Tyler responded by punching the victim in the face and then slamming them headfirst into a brick wall twice. The victim, whose identity and charges were not made public by SLED, was still handcuffed during the alleged assault. The incident was reportedly captured on video from multiple angles, and Tyler is said to have admitted his involvement after being mirandized. He has since been booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies are actively searching for a man who allegedly set a gas station pump on fire in Southwest Miami-Dade on August 13 at 2 a.m. Surveillance video shows the man, wearing dark clothing, approaching a pump at a Chevron gas station on Southwest 40th Street and 87th Avenue. He was seen holding a sign that reportedly read “Cuban Lives Matter…End Embargo,” referencing U.S. sanctions against Cuba. The man placed a bag on top of the pump and then ignited it, causing the pump to explode in flames. He was seen running away, appearing to be injured, falling to the ground before getting up and continuing to flee southbound. The fire continued to burn until an individual used a fire extinguisher, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue firefighters arrived shortly after to fully extinguish the blaze. Over two weeks have passed since the incident, and no arrests have been made. Authorities are now seeking public assistance to identify and locate the individual responsible for the arson.

A body camera photo released by the Livingston County Sheriff's Office showed the conditions within the box truck. The children were transported to a hospital for examination due to concerns about possible heat-related injuries. The driver reportedly informed law enforcement that the group was in the process of relocating from Louisiana to Michigan. Hamel also faces an additional charge of driving with a suspended license. Both individuals are currently held at the Livingston County Jail.
