Heavy Caffeine Consumption Linked to Deeper NREM Sleep Despite Shorter Total Sleep Time, Study Finds
New research published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology indicates that individuals who consume four or more caffeinated drinks daily experience shorter overall sleep durations but exhibit deeper non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. The study analyzed data from over 485,000 participants in the UK Biobank and 1,700 individuals from the HypnoLaus cohort. While sleep quality ratings and chronotype (morning or evening person) were not dependent on caffeine intake, a significant association was found between high caffeine consumption and reduced total sleep time. However, a surprising finding was the increased depth of NREM sleep in heavy caffeine users, suggesting a potential compensatory mechanism.
