European Airports Experience First Passenger Traffic Decline Since 2021 Amid Regional Unrest
In April 2026, European airports reported a decline in passenger traffic for the first time since recovery efforts began in 2021. According to data from Airports Council International, there was a 0.7% decrease in passenger numbers compared to the previous year. This decline marks a significant shift from the steady growth observed in recent years. The EU+ zone experienced a slight growth of 0.6%, with the EU itself seeing a 1.4% increase. However, regions outside the EU faced a 7.6% drop, largely due to ongoing unrest in the Middle East affecting airports in Israel, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Local conditions, such as a national strike in Germany, also contributed to the downturn, with major German cities like Munich and Frankfurt experiencing significant declines.
