American Rivers Names Potomac River Most Endangered Due to Sewage and Data Center Threats
The Potomac River has been named the most endangered river in the United States by the nonprofit conservation organization American Rivers. This designation is due to significant threats from sewage pollution and the rapid development of data centers in the river's vicinity. The Potomac River basin, which spans parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC, has been severely impacted by the failure of the Potomac Interceptor wastewater pipe in Montgomery County, Maryland. This incident resulted in hundreds of millions of gallons of untreated sewage being dumped into the river, causing bacteria levels to exceed safe recreational limits by over 4,000 times.
