Rep. Greg Casar Calls for Shutdown of Texas Detention Center After 5-Year-Old Detained by ICE
U.S. Congressman Greg Casar, a Democrat from Texas, has reiterated his demand for the closure of the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas. This call comes after 5-year-old Liam Tadeo and his father, Victor Martinez Nieto, were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a traffic stop in Austin. The father and son were on their way to a soccer game when they were arrested and subsequently taken to the Dilley facility, a for-profit center operated by CoreCivic. Casar highlighted that Liam was scheduled to start kindergarten and should not be held in what he described as a 'trailer prison.' The administration has reportedly refused to release Liam to his mother or other family members in Austin. Consequently, Liam's father has chosen to be deported to Mexico with his son rather than risk Liam being placed into the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) as an unaccompanied child, a system known for holding children for extended periods.
