Wife of Charleston Record Store Owner Raises ALS Awareness with 150 Painted Rocks
Janet Berg, wife of Bruce Berg, owner of Record Stop in Charleston, is raising awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) by distributing 150 painted rocks throughout the Charleston area. Bruce Berg, a prominent figure in the record store business for over 50 years, was diagnosed with ALS two years ago. His family first noticed something was wrong when he could no longer hold a guitar pick. As his illness has progressed, his daughter, Janelle Berg-Gomez, has taken over the operations of Record Stop. Bruce Berg is known for his extensive knowledge of music, his ability to procure rare titles, and his stories, including one about attending Woodstock in 1969. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to the death of nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and paralysis, and currently has no cure. Janet Berg dedicates much of her time to caring for her husband, and in her free moments, she paints these rocks as a way to cope and bring attention to the disease.
