U.S. Representative Jim McGovern, Ranking Member of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, co-hosted a shadow hearing titled “The Void in China Policy: Why Human Rights Must Be on Trump’s Agenda with Xi at the White House.” This hearing was held ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to the U.S. and was co-hosted with Ranking Member Ro Khanna of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The hearing featured testimonies from individuals like Palden Gyal, President of the International Tibet Media Organization, who accused the CCP of systematic efforts to erase Tibetan identity, including through the “Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law.” Other witnesses included Tahir Imin, Founder and Director of Uyghur Post, and Yaqiu Wang, Fellow at the Penn Project on the Future of US-China Relations.
