Centrist Democrats Introduce Pledge to Emphasize Capitalism and Moderate Policies
Two Democratic members of Congress, Rep. Tom Suozzi from New York and Rep. Adam Gray from California, are launching a new pledge aimed at rallying centrist candidates within the Democratic Party. This initiative, which will be unveiled at the center-left conference WelcomeFest, seeks to promote a 'politics of persuasion over purity' and firmly declares 'we are capitalist, not socialist.' The pledge is a response to the growing influence of democratic socialists within the party, such as New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders. Suozzi and Gray, who both flipped Republican-held seats in 2024, argue that their centrist message has broader appeal, especially in battleground races. The pledge is part of a broader effort by moderates to assert their influence as the party prepares for upcoming midterms and the 2028 presidential race.
