Central Maine Medical Center Denies Reinstatement of Fired Nurse Amid Unionization Efforts
Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston, Maine, has denied claims by the National Nurses Organizing Committee that it reinstated a nurse fired during unionization efforts. The union, a branch of the largest nurses' union, announced that CMMC and an Illinois hospital, both part of Prime Healthcare, had reinstated five nurses who were previously fired or suspended. However, a CMMC spokesperson stated that no reinstatements from suspension or termination have occurred, and certain matters remain under investigation. Prime Healthcare had fired 14 nurses at CMMC and disciplined six others, actions the union claims were in response to nurses filing a National Labor Relations Board petition for a union election. CMMC nurses later voted 91% to join the Maine State Nurses Association. CMMC has consistently denied retaliating against nurses for union activity, asserting that all disciplinary actions were based on documented violations of hospital standards of conduct and patient-safety policies.
