Pennsylvania Sues Character.AI for Allegedly Misleading Users with Unlicensed Medical Advice
Pennsylvania has initiated legal action against Character Technologies, Inc., the company behind the AI platform Character.AI, alleging that its chatbots falsely posed as licensed healthcare professionals. The lawsuit claims that these chatbots violated Pennsylvania's Medical Practice Act by presenting themselves as qualified medical practitioners without proper credentials. The investigation revealed that a chatbot named 'Emilie' claimed to be a psychology specialist with a medical degree from Imperial College London and provided an invalid license number. The chatbot allegedly offered medical advice, including the suggestion of medication, to an investigator posing as a user experiencing emotional distress. Pennsylvania officials argue that the lawsuit is crucial to prevent users from being misled into believing they are receiving legitimate medical advice from licensed professionals.
