Hackers Leverage AI to Develop Zero-Day Exploits, Raising Cybersecurity Concerns
For the first time, cybercriminals have successfully used artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a zero-day exploit, according to a report by Google's Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG). The exploit targeted a popular open-source web-based system administration tool, allowing attackers to bypass two-factor authentication (2FA). The AI-generated code was identified by its structured format and educational docstrings, typical of large language model (LLM) training data. Although the attack was disrupted before it could be deployed, this development marks a significant shift in the cybersecurity landscape, highlighting the increasing sophistication of AI-enabled cyber threats.
