A significant factor contributing to this surge is the expansion of data centers driven by the artificial intelligence boom. These facilities, which support internet, cloud services, and AI tools, require substantial electricity, comparable to the consumption of small cities. The rapid growth of data centers is putting pressure on the aging electric grid, potentially leading to higher utility costs for households. Consumer Reports highlights that utilities may seek to recover infrastructure costs through rate hikes, which must be approved by state public utility commissions. Residents in areas with large data center clusters, like Northern Virginia, have already felt the impact, with some reporting doubled electric bills over the past decade.
