In Hillsborough, New Jersey, residents have mobilized in response to rising property tax bills, with the average bill exceeding $10,500 last year. Aleicia Uccardi, a local resident, spearheaded the effort by organizing a group of over 500 concerned neighbors. At a recent Township Committee meeting, Uccardi emphasized the need for collaboration with local officials to find solutions for tax relief and long-term fiscal sustainability. The residents sought transparency in the township's annual reassessment process, receiving direct responses from the Chief Financial Officer. This movement echoes a historical tax revolt in New Jersey during the early 1990s, which was significantly influenced by the local radio station NJ 101.5. The station played a pivotal role in rallying public sentiment against a $2.8 billion tax increase implemented by then-Governor Jim Florio, leading to a significant political shift in the state.
