Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Leads Record-Breaking Tree Planting Campaign
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed spearheaded a nationwide initiative to plant 800 million tree seedlings in a single day as part of the Green Legacy Initiative. By midday, over 578.6 million seedlings had been planted, marking significant progress toward one of the world's largest coordinated tree-planting efforts. The campaign, which mobilized 18.6 million citizens, is a key component of Ethiopia's environmental strategy, aiming to plant more than 8 billion seedlings during the rainy season. The initiative, launched in 2019, focuses on combating deforestation, restoring degraded landscapes, and enhancing biodiversity. This year's effort is also linked to Ethiopia's bid to host the COP32 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
