Banksy's Artworks in London Lead to Significant Public Expenditure
Three artworks by the renowned street artist Banksy have resulted in nearly £150,000 in public spending for cleaning and security in London. The most significant expense is associated with a mural on the Royal Courts of Justice, which has cost over £85,000 in removal efforts and security. This mural, depicting a judge in a wig battering a protester, was painted in September 2025. The Ministry of Justice has spent £50,000 on paint removal from the Grade II-listed building, with an additional £35,300 on overtime and security. The Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident as criminal damage, but no arrests have been made. Westminster City Council, which now owns the statue, is considering future options for the artwork.
