Native Hawaiian Entrepreneurs Drive Economic Sovereignty Through Traditional Textiles
Native Hawaiian entrepreneurs, led by figures like Max Mukai, are spearheading a movement towards economic sovereignty by reviving traditional Hawaiian textiles and apparel. Mukai, who started with a modest investment in fabric and a home sewing machine, has grown his brand, Kahui Palaka, into a significant player in the local apparel industry. This initiative is part of a broader effort to foster economic self-reliance among Native Hawaiians, especially as federal support for related programs becomes uncertain. The movement emphasizes building local wealth and ownership, deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture. Mukai also manages the KuHana Business Accelerator Program, which has helped numerous entrepreneurs develop viable business plans. The recent Native Hawaiian Convention highlighted these efforts, focusing on entrepreneurship, workforce development, and cultural industries.
