Puna Residents Face Long Waits for Post Office Boxes Amid Population Growth
In Puna, Hawaii, residents are experiencing significant delays in obtaining post office boxes due to rapid population growth and limited postal infrastructure. The area, which has seen its population increase by 20,000 people between 2000 and 2020, now has an estimated 60,000 residents. Despite this growth, there are only 7,911 P.O. boxes available across four small post offices in the region. Many residents rely on these boxes as there is no residential mail delivery. The shortage has led to long waitlists and challenges in accessing mail, impacting daily activities such as voting, online shopping, and receiving important documents.
