Northwestern Professor Removed from Conference for Distributing Anti-Trump Editorial
A Northwestern University professor, Justin Ryder, was escorted out of the American Diabetes Association's Scientific Sessions conference in New Orleans for distributing an editorial critical of President Trump's proposed budget cuts to the National Institutes of Health. The editorial, published in the journal Diabetes Care, criticized the administration's plan to cut $5 billion from the NIH's 2027 budget, which could impact research opportunities and patient care across the U.S. Ryder, along with four others, was removed by local law enforcement for violating conference policies on unauthorized material distribution. The American Diabetes Association emphasized that the removal was due to policy violations, not the editorial's content.
