Weld County Declines Participation in Greeley's Catalyst Project, Citing Financial Risk
Weld County has decided not to participate in the financing of the Catalyst Project in Greeley, Colorado. The decision was communicated in a letter from the Weld County Board of County Commissioners to the City of Greeley, following a meeting on July 20, 2026. The Catalyst Project, which includes plans for a 10,000-seat arena, a hotel, a water park, and other facilities, was seeking financial backing from the county to issue 'moral obligation' bonds. These bonds would have leveraged the county's credit rating to reduce borrowing costs by approximately $100 million. However, the county commissioners expressed concerns about the financial risks involved, stating that it was not appropriate for taxpayers to assume such risks. The project remains in limbo as Greeley continues to seek alternative financial partners.
