NASA's Artemis I Radiation Vest Shows Promise in Reducing Astronauts' Solar Storm Exposure
A recent study has highlighted the effectiveness of a radiation-shielding vest tested during NASA's Artemis I mission. The vest, worn by a manikin named Zohar, was designed to protect astronauts from radiation during severe solar storms. The Artemis I mission, which was uncrewed, served as a precursor to future manned lunar missions. The vest, developed by StemRad and Lockheed Martin, was tested alongside another manikin, Helga, which did not wear the vest. The study, published in Science Advances, suggests that the vest could significantly reduce radiation exposure, a major concern for astronauts on lunar missions. The vest is intended for use during high-radiation events and covers vital organs, offering protection particularly for female astronauts who are more susceptible to radiation-induced cancer.
