Wisconsin Tornado Activity Surges in 2026, EF3 Events Reach Record High
Wisconsin has experienced a significant increase in tornado activity in 2026, surpassing the annual state average with 39 tornadoes recorded as of July 13. The state is now on the fringes of the expanded tornado-prone zone, which has shifted beyond the Great Plains into the Midwest and Southeast. Notably, Wisconsin recorded its fourth EF3-strength tornado of the year on July 27, marking the highest number of such events since 1984. Historically, fewer than 5% of tornadoes in the state reach EF3 strength. Tornadoes in southern Wisconsin are most likely to occur in the afternoon, particularly between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., posing challenges for emergency response during peak commuting hours. Scientists are investigating the role of climate change in this shift, as warmer and more humid conditions increase vulnerability.
